JoAnne DiSano is the Director of the Division for Sustainable Development, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the United Nations. She is responsible for monitoring implementation of the agreements signed by some 120 governments at the Earth Summit in Rio, including Agenda 21, the action plan for the next century.
She oversees international negotiations on forest management,
technology transfer, financing for environmentally sound development, sustainable
tourism, energy, and water resources management. Previously, she was deputy
head of the Department of the Environment, Sport and Territories, in Australia,
in which capacity she headed the Australian delegation to several international
negotiating sessions and to the Environment Committee of the Organization for
Economic Co-operation and Development.
